The Place I Never Took Up

The drawer in the back room sticks, and he stopped meaning to fix it a long time ago. You have to lift the front edge with your thumbs and pull, and then it comes all at once and everything inside slides to the back: two rolls of packing tape, a stapler that jams, a tin of buttons that belonged to somebody, and one envelope with a crease across it so old the paper has gone soft as cloth.

The shop sells departures. Suitcases stacked four high in the window, canvas holdalls, shoulder straps, the little brass padlocks, luggage tags in six colors on a spinner by the register. Every working day of his life somebody comes in leaving for somewhere, and he is the man who sells them the bag to leave in.

He was going to go. That is the plain fact of it and there is a piece of paper. The envelope in the drawer has his name on it and the name of a school four hundred miles north, and inside there is a letter saying yes, and a date, and a list of what to bring. He was nineteen. Four years. A course with a word in the title he still likes the sound of.

Then his brother made his decision. It was not a wicked decision, and somehow that is the hardest part of the whole thing. His brother went after something he wanted with both hands, the way people do, and left in the spring, and the shop and the father and the stock and the ledger and the winter and the hospital appointments all came down on the only other set of shoulders in the family. Nobody sat him down about it. Nobody asked him. There was simply nobody else, and there was a letter with a date on it, and the date went by on a Tuesday afternoon while he was signing for a delivery of trunks.

He never answered it. That is the part he cannot get around. Not that his brother went. That the letter sat in the drawer and he did not write back, so the whole thing has his own handwriting on it, or rather the absence of his own handwriting, which he has decided is worse.

Nineteen years. He is thirty-eight and he is good at this, better at it than his brother would ever have been, and the shop is steady and his mother is comfortable and two boys are growing up in the rooms above it. And every so often he lifts that drawer with his thumbs and looks at the soft old envelope and says the sentence, quietly, to nobody in particular: I was the one who did not go.

You have a drawer. You are carrying a thing that was done to you as though it were a thing you did, and it is written in Genesis 50:20 that a man may name the harm accurately and name the hand of God in the very same breath, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping the true account beside you the entire time. The sentence you say about yourself is not the truth of it. It is only the one that ever got written down.

Joseph says it plainly, and never once calls it something else

Here is the sentence, and I want you to notice how many things it is doing at the same time.

But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.Genesis 50:20

Consider where he is standing when he says it. His brothers are on the floor in front of him. Their father is buried. They are terrified, because with the old man gone they assume the reckoning has finally come, and they have sent a message ahead of themselves to soften it. Joseph is somewhere near fifty. The pit was a very long time ago and so were the years in an Egyptian house and the years in a prison for a thing he did not do.

Now look at what he does not say. He does not say it was fine. He does not say they meant well and he misread it. He does not say that God arranged the whole thing so it was never really theirs to answer for. He does not say, in any words at all, that it did not happen. He says: you thought evil against me. Plain, present, accurate, spoken to their faces without one softening word laid over it.

And look at the other half, which arrives in the same breath and does not cancel the first: but God meant it unto good. Two true sentences about one event, held together, neither one demoted to make room for the other. That is the whole architecture, and almost nobody is ever handed both halves. People are usually given one. Either the harm, and then they live inside it. Or the good, and then they have to pretend the harm was not harm.

Look also at what Joseph never does. He names no course of action. He does not tell his brothers what they now owe or what should be done about them. A verse earlier he asks whether he stands in the place of God, and the answer to that is no, and the account is therefore not in his hands and never was. He is not required to arrange anything before he can speak. Neither are you, and I am not going to ask you to. Whatever you do or do not do about your brother is between you and God, and it is not the entry fee for a word from Him.

You are entitled to both halves of that verse, because Genesis 50:20 gives a man both halves and does not make him choose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds them together in a person without either one going quiet. The harm was harm. God's hand was on it. You do not have to pick.

What was taken, and what you have been calling it

Here is where the drawer comes in, and it is the thing this whole message exists to say.

The four years of study were taken. They were yours. Somebody else's decision spent them, nobody consulted you about it, and the fact that the decision was ordinary and not wicked changes nothing about where the years went. That is what happened. It is not a dramatic version and it is not a bitter version. It is the version.

And what you say about yourself is a different sentence entirely. I was the one who did not go. Do you hear what that does? It takes an event with somebody else's hands all over it and reassigns it to yours. It turns a theft into a preference. Nineteen years of a man quietly signing a confession for a thing he did not do, in a back room, over a drawer that sticks.

Joseph never once did that. He did not say, I was the one who wandered out to Dothan. He did not build a story where his own poor judgment about a coat and a dream explained the pit. He kept the record accurate and left the account with God, and that is the reason he could stand in that room at fifty and speak without either shaking or striking.

Now, plainly, so that nothing after this can be mistaken for softening it: the four years are not coming back. God restores, and restore is not a word that means replaced. It never was. There is no version of this where a letter arrives, nineteen years late, and a man of thirty-eight walks into a lecture hall at nineteen and gets the decade over again. What is being handed back is not the years. It is the man, out from under a sentence he wrote against himself and had no standing to write.

You are not the one who did not go, and Scripture says a thing thought against a man stays a thing thought against him no matter how long he has been signing for it, and the Holy Spirit is at work restoring the man in the back room and not the calendar.
