The Circle That Closed Without Me

It rains hard on a tin roof and then it stops, and the meeting keeps going through both, and everybody there has learned to talk in the gaps without noticing they are doing it.

The chairs are pulled into a ring. About thirty of them. A young woman is chairing, and she is good at it, and she keeps it moving: the culvert at the low end of the road, the shade structure, the fundraiser in the fall, the kitchen schedule, whether the new sign-up sheet on the clipboard is working better than the old way. It is working better than the old way.

He came in four minutes late and took a chair at the back, which a ring does not really have, so he ended up half behind the man on his left.

For eight years he was not here. His wife was sick for five of them and he did the nights, and then she died, and then there were the two years where he mostly did not answer the phone, and then this year, when he started driving down the hill again.

Before that he ran this hall. Not the whole thing, but a good part of it. He knew the fuse box and which key opened the side door and how much propane a fundraiser eats. He was the man you called at six in the morning when the water stopped.

Nobody was unkind tonight. Two people were plainly glad to see him and said so and meant it. Somebody said good to have you back, in the way people say it, and then turned to say something about the culvert. Nobody asked him to do anything, and he understood exactly why: nobody knows what he can do now, and nobody wanted to put him on the spot in front of thirty people.

Walking out to the truck he did the count without deciding to. Of the eleven people who actually run things now, he knows four. The sign-up sheet has a system on it that somebody built and he does not understand. There is a group chat. There is a whole way of doing this that grew while he was doing nights.

The circle closed. That is what he thinks in the truck with the key in his hand and the rain starting again. It closed cleanly, and it left no gap.

You have your own ring of chairs. It might be a church, a team, a shop, a family that reorganized itself around your absence and did it well. And nobody was cruel to you and that is somehow worse, and the sentence you drove home with is the one about there being no gap.

You were never a hole in a room, so a closed circle proves nothing about you. Ephesians 2:10 says you are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God ordained beforehand, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been holding a work in front of you through eight years nobody would have chosen.

The word came before the wall

Here is a man with no standing whatsoever walking into a town that had gone on without him for a hundred and forty years.

Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.Nehemiah 2:18

Get his position clear before you read what he said. Nehemiah was a cupbearer eight hundred miles away in a foreign palace. He was not there when the wall came down. He had never lifted a stone in that city in his life, he did not know the families, and the people standing in front of him had been living in that rubble since before he could remember. If anybody ever had no gap waiting for him, it was that man in that street.

Now look at what he did first, and more importantly at what he did not do. He did not demonstrate his usefulness. He did not put a plan on the table and hope to be taken seriously. He did not list what he used to be. He told them what the hand of God had been doing on him.

And the answer came back: let us rise up and build. Us. The circle opened on a testimony, not on a resume.

You are one of the people that sentence includes, and the including happened before any work got done. Nehemiah 2:18 has the telling in front of the building, and it is the Holy Spirit who has already put you inside the word us while you were still doing arithmetic in a truck.

Restored is not reinstated, and usefulness is not the proof

Now the honest part, and there are two halves to it.

The chair you left is somebody else's now. That is a real loss, and it is not going to be reframed here as a happy development or as God's better plan. Somebody is doing the thing you did, and doing it well, and both of those facts land on the same nerve.

But reinstating and restoring are not the same act. To reinstate a man is to put him back in a position, which requires the position to still be empty, which is why you have been checking whether it is. To restore a man is to put something back into him, and then he walks into a room that has moved on and finds out what he is now for. God is not in the business of running that hall backward eight years so you can have your chair. He is in the business of the man walking in four minutes late.

And here is the half that matters most on this page. Usefulness is not the proof of restoration. Nehemiah put the word first for a reason, and if you make the wall the evidence, then every day you cannot lift anything becomes evidence against you. You are not on trial in that hall and nothing you carry or fail to carry is being entered as evidence. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit who applies that word in a room where a man is quietly waiting to be asked and quietly dreading being asked.

If your capacity is genuinely less than it was, hear this plainly, because it is in the text. Nobody built that wall. Read the next chapter: it is a list of families, each one building the piece in front of their own house, and there are goldsmiths in it and there are perfumers in it, which are not the trades you send for when you need a wall. The thing was built in sections because people come in sections. You have a section and never the whole wall, and that was the design and not a concession made for you. Nehemiah 3 is the written record of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been sizing a piece of work to a man's actual strength since long before your eight years started.
