Years RestoredPsalm 56:8

Before Anybody Wrote It Down

This message is for to name the eleven years spent being told it was anxiety before anybody wrote the real diagnosis down, and hand those years over without being promised them back

The chairs in this waiting room are the good kind, the ones with arms, and she is sitting with the folder on her knees the way a person holds something that might get away from them.

It is not a neat folder. She started it three times. The oldest pages are in the handwriting of a woman of thirty who still believed the whole thing would be finished by spring: generous loops, whole sentences, the word hopefully more than once. There is a typed stretch in the middle, because typing felt more official and she thought official might help. Then it goes back to pen, smaller and harder, and by then the sentences have stopped explaining anything at all. Date. Hour. What happened. How long it lasted. Eleven years of a life reduced to four columns, because four columns was the only version of it anybody had ever seemed willing to read.

Eleven years of being told it was anxiety. Kindly, most of the time. Stress can do remarkable things to a body, one of them said, and she wrote that down too, in the small handwriting, under a date. She got good at saying the word herself before anyone else could say it to her, the way a person gets out ahead of a joke that is going to be made either way. For two of those years she stopped bringing the folder to appointments altogether, because bringing it looked like exactly the thing they had already decided she was.

Her name is called. Inside, there is a doctor who reads for a long time and does not fill the silence with anything. He turns the folder around and taps one line she wrote four years ago in the small handwriting, and asks how often that happens. She tells him. He asks how long it lasts. She tells him. He writes something down, and the something has a name in it, and the name is not anxiety.

She is relieved. She wants that to be clear, even to herself, even sitting in the good chair afterward while the parking lot fills up: the relief is real and it does not touch the other thing at all. The other thing has no manners and is not grateful and is sitting up in her chest saying one sentence over and over. Eleven years. Her son was seven when this started. He is eighteen now. She spent the entire middle of him being a woman with a folder.

You have a folder too. Maybe it is a plastic bag of discharge papers, or a note app with two hundred entries, or nothing on paper at all because you gave up writing it down around year four. You know the exact feeling of finally being believed and finding something underneath the relief that does not behave. That is not ingratitude and I am not going to treat it as one. That is eleven years standing up in the room and asking, out loud, whether anybody anywhere kept the count. You are counted, and every unwritten year of it is counted with you. Psalm 56:8 says your tears are kept in His book, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping that record beside you the whole time you thought nobody was writing anything down.

He was writing it down the whole time

Let me put the verse in front of you before I say a word about it, because this is one people quote at half strength, and the half they drop is the half you need.

You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?Psalm 56:8

Read what David is asking to have on record. Not the war. Not the public trouble, not the part of his life that had witnesses. Tossings is the turning over in a bed at night, the sleeplessness nobody is awake to see, and that is what he wants to know about. And he is not asking anxiously. He asks it the way a person asks a question they already know the answer to, because he has settled who God is: the God who keeps the part of your suffering that has no paperwork, and it is His Spirit who moved him to write the question down where you would one morning find it.

Sit with what that means for eleven undiagnosed years, because the wound there is specific and it is not mainly medical. The wound is that it happened and left no trace. No entry. No chart. No line anywhere in the world's record saying this woman is not making this up. A human being can carry an enormous amount of pain. Almost nobody can carry pain that was never written down anywhere, because after a while you start to wonder whether you are the unreliable one.

You were never the unreliable witness in this. His word says He kept count of the tossings, which is precisely the part your file did not have, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept it, not a clerk, not a system, not a person who might have lost the page.

And notice where the record was kept. In His book, which is to say in the one place where nothing is mislaid and nothing gets quietly amended later by somebody who was not there. A doctor's file begins on the day the doctor begins writing. His book begins on the first night.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

Now the promise this whole site stands on, and I am quoting it exactly, because loose quoting is where the damage gets in.

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.Joel 2:25

Hold that verse at its real size. God spoke it to a nation about a swarm, and He is not vague about eaten years: He counts them, and He names the eating in four separate words. What He does not say is that the eaten years come back to you in a box. Restore is not the same word as replace. Replaced would mean the eleven years arrive again with your son at seven inside them, and they do not, and I am not going to hand you a softer version of that and let you find it out later on your own.

Restored means God puts back into a person what was taken out of them. Not the calendar. The woman the calendar was taken from. And that is smaller than what you wanted and enormously bigger than what you were being offered. Getting the years back would leave you exactly the person the eleven years made, holding a decade you no longer know how to spend. Being restored gives you back yourself: the trust in your own account of your own body, the willingness to say a true sentence in a room full of professionals, the part of you that quietly went out of business somewhere around year six.

You have your own testimony back, and it does not need a countersignature. It is written in Psalm 56:8 that the tossings were counted long before anybody believed you, and the same Spirit who moved David to write that line down is standing with you now while you say it out loud.

And your anger is not on trial here. Not the anger at the years, not at the appointments, not at the sentence about stress. Moses prayed out loud, in Scripture, make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us (Psalm 90:15), and he put the count into the prayer, and God kept the prayer. Handing something over is not the same as saying it did not matter. It is saying it matters far too much to keep carrying by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens now, and it is not that somebody gives you the eleven years.

You are going to say them. Out loud, by their dates, from the first to the last. Not to a specialist, not to a form, not to the person who said the thing about stress. To God, who kept count of the tossings before there was a file to keep them in. And then you are going to hand them over in one sentence, and not because handing them over buys anything, but because they were never yours to carry alone and they have been sitting on your knees like a folder for eleven years. You have the ground to do it, and the ground is written and not felt. Psalm 56:8 says the count is already in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed this long, at His pace and not at mine.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, with the count still in the room. You are in Christ, and the right to say what is true over your own years was given to you by Him and not earned by outlasting them, so none of this is you working something up. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it. Jesus said that whoever speaks to a mountain and does not doubt in his heart has what he says, so speak to the mountain, and leave the outcome to Him: His timing is His own, nothing here dates anything, and nothing here promises the years back. What is promised is the person, restored, and that was written down long before your folder was.

  1. Folder on my knees, you do not get the last word over these eleven years. It is written in Psalm 56:8 that God kept count of my tossings and put my tears in His book, so I hand you over, date by date, into the hands that were already holding the count.
  2. Voice that says I imagined it, you are not my witness and you do not keep my record. Restored is not replaced and I am not asking for a copy of those years; what I am taking back is my own true account of my own body, in the name of Jesus, because Scripture says the count was kept before a single person believed me.
  3. Father, You kept the count when there was no file and no name and nobody writing anything down, and I am not asking You to hand the eleven years back. I thank You that Your word says my tears are in Your book and that Your Spirit has been the one keeping them there. Today I am saying the dates out loud and putting the whole count where it has belonged the entire time, in Your hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
