Truly RestoredJob 14:7

The Only Handwriting He Left

This message is for honesty about restoration when the box that burned held the only handwriting your father ever left, and people keep telling you God restores everything

The shelf is at eye level, which is the worst possible height, because you cannot walk into the room without looking at it.

There is a rectangle in the dust where the box sat. A shoebox with a rubber band around it that had gone chalky and would have snapped the next time anybody stretched it. Inside, four things, and he could list them in his sleep.

A recipe card for a marinade, written in block capitals, because his father wrote everything in block capitals like a man filling out a form. The back of an envelope with directions to a lake on it: left at the church, past the second bridge, the gravel road with the mailbox down. A birthday card with three words in it and a name. And a note left on a kitchen counter one Saturday morning that said, gone to get the tires, back by five, do not let the dog out.

That is the entire body of work. His father was a quiet man who was not a writer and never once wrote a letter, and he died when the son was nineteen. Those four items were the only sentences in that man's hand that existed anywhere on earth.

The garage fire happened during a move. It was electrical, it was nobody's fault, and the boxes stacked nearest the wall went first. Somebody from the fire department was very kind. He remembers the kindness better than the flames, which is its own strange thing.

For a while afterward people said things.

God restores everything, said a cousin, standing in the driveway with his hands open because he had nothing else to put in them. He will give it back double, said a man from the church, who had buried a wife two years earlier and meant every syllable of it. The Lord is in the business of restoration, said a card that came in the mail with a tree on the front of it.

He did not argue with any of them. He said thank you, and he meant that too, and then he went home and stood in front of a shelf with a rectangle of dust on it, and did the honest arithmetic in his own head. Nobody is bringing back a note about tires. Not double, not once, not ever. It is ash and it went up a chimney with somebody's Christmas decorations, and that is what happened.

You are standing in front of your own shelf. Yours might be a phone that went in the lake with the only recording of a voice on it, or a house that took the photographs with it, or a hard drive, or a letter you posted back in anger and cannot get returned. And you have your own driveway full of kind people saying the thing they said, and you have your own silence afterward, where you know something they have not said out loud and you have never argued with them about it. You are holding an honest thought and it is not a failure of faith to be holding it. Job 14 is in Scripture with its hard sentences left in and nobody edited them out for being discouraging, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept them there, which means He is not nervous about what you have been thinking in front of that shelf.

Job said both halves and only one gets quoted

There is a verse about a tree that people put on cards, and it is a true verse, and it is worth reading with the paragraph it came out of still attached.

For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.Job 14:7

That is the line on the card. Here is what Job says a few sentences later, in the same breath, about the difference between the tree and the person: a man dies and is laid low, man breathes his last, and where is he. He is not being faithless. He is being exact. A tree has a root that answers water. A man does not have that, and Job says so, out loud, in the Bible, and the Holy Spirit put it in the book and left it in.

So when you have thought the honest thought and then felt bad for thinking it, understand what you were actually doing. You were saying the second half of a passage that people only quote the first half of.

You are permitted the whole passage and not only the part that fits on a card. That is written into Job 14 by a man in ashes, and it is the same Spirit who preserved his complaint word for word who is at that shelf with you and has not once asked you to soften it.

And I want to say something about the cousin in the driveway, because it would be cheap to make him the fool of this article. He was not being stupid. He was standing in front of a person he loved with a fire behind them and nothing whatever in his hands, and he reached for the biggest true thing he could think of and said it badly. That is what people do. Most of them would take the sentence back if they knew, and almost none of them will ever know. They were not wrong that God restores. They were wrong about what the word means.

Restored is a word about a person, not a word about a copy

Here is the difference, and this site lives or dies on it.

Replaced would mean the box back on the shelf. Four items, the rubber band, the block capitals, the gravel road with the mailbox down. Restored does not mean that and never did. Restored means the man standing in the study is being put back together, with the shelf still empty, and God is not offering him a duplicate of his father's handwriting as a substitute for doing it.

Think about what a copy would actually be worth. If somebody handed you a perfect forgery of that note about the tires, in the exact hand, aged correctly, you would not want it. You would know. The thing that made it precious was that his hand held the pen, and a copy is precisely the part of it that cannot be copied. So a God who restored by copying would be a God who did not understand what you lost. He does understand. That is why He does not do it that way.

You have a God who is restoring the person and refusing to insult him with a duplicate, and that refusal is mercy and not withholding. Job 14:7 says a cut tree has hope, and the hope Job names is in the root and not in the branch that was taken off, and it is the Holy Spirit who is working in the root of you while the shelf stays exactly as empty as it is.

And if you are angry about the fire, or about the move, or about the wall the boxes were stacked against, keep it. Nothing in this is asking you to put the anger down first as a condition. You were not asked before it burned, and being angry about that has never once put you outside the reach of God. Psalm 88 ends in darkness with no resolution at all and it is still in the songbook, and the Spirit who inspired it is not looking for a better attitude before He works.

The breakthrough

So this is the moment, and it is not the moment where the box comes back.

Here is what happens next: two sentences said out loud, and the fact that there are two of them is the whole point. One sentence for what is not coming back, said plainly, with the name of the thing in it. Then stop. Do not run the two together with a but, because a but is where the first sentence gets quietly canceled, and that has been done to it for long enough.

Then a second sentence, separate, for one thing that is being restored in you. Not the thing. You. Something you can actually name: that you can stand in this room now, that you said his name last week without your voice going, that you write things down for your own children.

You have both sentences and you are not required to trade one for the other. Job 14 holds a hope and a hard fact in the same chapter without collapsing either, that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person say both without lying in either direction.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, and speak carefully, because this is the article where careless words have already cost you something. This authority is not yours because you have grieved well; it is yours in Christ, given to you by the One who wept at a grave He was about to open and did not hurry anybody past the weeping. Scripture is under every line here and the Holy Spirit is what makes the words live. Say them to what is in the room, and leave the outcome to Him, however He answers, because a declaration is not a lever and nothing here is going to be turned into a promise it did not make.

  1. Empty shelf where the box sat, you are not a verdict on what God does. It is written that a cut tree sprouts again, and I am not asking Him for a copy of what burned, so you can stay empty and you still do not get to speak for Him.
  2. Sentence that says I am the end of him, you have no right to stay in my mouth. In the name of Jesus I am saying the true thing instead: his handwriting is gone and I am here, and both of those are facts and only one of them is finished.
  3. Father, You are restoring the person and You are not handing me a duplicate, and I am not going to ask You for one. I thank You that Your word keeps Job's hard sentence in the book beside the hopeful one, and that Your Spirit is working in the root while the shelf stays empty. I am saying both of my sentences out loud today and leaving them with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
